Arrested counterfeiter says he learned how to make fake money from Youtube

If you need proof that you can learn anything from the internet, this is it.

The Depok Police arrested two counterfeiters, Doni Setiawan and Ahmad, suspected of making and distributing fake money.

The police say Doni was the brains behind the operation and was responsible of producing the fake money in Pekalongan, Central Java. It turned out that Doni, who only holds a middle school diploma, learned the trade from a source that’s widely available to the public.

“I saw it on Youtube and followed [the video’s instructions],” he said, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

Doni added that he only needed two weeks to master the trade.

The police say Doni’s fake money so closely resembles the real thing that special equipment is needed to differentiate them.

The two suspects resorted to counterfeiting money after they got themselves deep in financial debt. They sold their fake money to buyers in Depok, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta for half of the fake money’s purported value. They were able to make Rp 90 million in profit during four months of operation.
