Governor Ahok’s 6 dreams for the future of Indonesia

As part of a project called Time Capsule Expedition 2085, a capsule is being sent to cities across Indonesia for people to insert relics of the modern age as well as their hopes for the future of the country. The capsule started its journey in Sabang, Indonesia’s westernmost city, and is traveling all the way east to Merauke in Papua, where it will be stored and then reopened after 70 years.

The time capsule arrived in Jakarta’s City Hall on Saturday and Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama decided to include his own dreams for the future of the country, in the form of a 6-point charter.

“I dream that Indonesia will have laws requiring officials and the state apparatus to authenticate their funds, and also that Indonesia could carry out all non-cash transactions. In order to achieve social justice, and to free us from corruption, collusion, and nepotism. That is my dream,” the governor said during the time capsule ceremony in City Hall on Saturday, as quoted by Kompas.

As for the six points on the charter Ahok placed in the time capsule:

1. I dream that there is no longer conflict between ethnicities, religions, villages, and football fans. That the spirit of “gotong royong” (mutual cooperation) will once again become the habit of the Indonesian people.

2. I dream of Indonesia becoming the world center for the development of herbal medicine. All the drugs that the people want can be found in plants native to Indonesia. The government must take care of Indonesia’s forests because it contains these medicines.

3. I dream that the children of Indonesia will create sophisticated computer programs and that Indonesia will become a technology exporter like the US and Europe.

4. I dream of an Indonesia that is free from corruption, large and small. All those who steal from the public have committed a great sin, like burning the forests which hurts people and prevents them from breathing.

5. I dream that Indonesian cuisine will become favored by citizens of the world. Asinan and gado-gado will be franchised. Ingredients will be exported directly from all provinces in Indonesia. One day we’ll have a Soto Betawi Pak Kumis franchise in San Francisco or a Gado-Gado Betawi outlet in Paris.

6. I dream that Indonesian soccer players can dominate the world’s great clubs. In the Champions League final, the winning goal will come from an Indonesian player. During the celebration, the player will rip off his jersey and beneath he’ll be wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with Garuda Pancasila Indonesia Raya.

Obviously some of Ahok’s dreams are a little more serious (and realistic) than others. But 70 years is a long time, so we do have hope that most of them can actually come true by 2085.
