Pickpocket publicly shamed in Manggarai train station after being caught stealing

An alleged pickpocket was made to stand outside under the midday sun yesterday at the Manggarai train station, if the above photograph by Facebook user Ary Gumilar is to be believed.

In the Facebook post, Ary wrote that the man was caught pickpocketing, though it wasn’t clear if he was stealing from people in a train or at the train station. After apprehending him, authorities at the station made the pickpocket take off his shirt and wear a sign made out of cardboard saying “I am a pickpocket”, before humiliating the pickpocket even further by making him perform exercise routines and dances in the middle of the day.

It’s unclear what happened to the pickpocket after this incident.

While we don’t condone any kind of criminal act, surely this pickpocket deserved a fair trial instead of being shamed in public.

This isn’t the first case of public shaming of petty criminals at train stations in Jakarta. A similar punishment was once dished out to an alleged pervert at Manggarai Station last year.
