But if you haven’t, we’ve totally got some awesome costume ideas for women that are very fitting for Halloween in Indonesia. Specifically, these ideas come from Indonesian horror movies.
If Indonesian horror movies are up your spook alley, then you should already be familiar with the wide range of creepy ghosts contained in Indonesian folklore.
Here, we picked out 5 of the most frightening (or ridiculous) female ghosts to have appeared in Indonesian horror movies. The best part is, dressing up like them won’t require much in preparation at all!
The ghost from ‘Toilet 105’
‘Toilet 105’ tells the story about a ghost that haunts a toilet in high school. The ghost here is actually pretty frightening:
But all you have to do to pull that off is to find a high school uniform. If you want to further convey that you’re the ghost from ‘Toilet 105’, you can simply wear a toilet seat over your head, kind of like what Moanin’ Myrtle did here:
The jamu lady from ‘Hantu Jamu Gendong’
If you’re a fan of jamu – Indonesia’s traditional herbal medicine drink – you probably have your own jamu lady. But you’ll probably agree with us that there is no jamu lady as… appealing as Julia Perez.
This elegant and traditional costume is actually really easy to pull off. But it’s imperative to carry a bamboo basket on your back and have it tied around your body with a cloth. That basket can also carry all the sweets you scored while trick-or-treatin’ (or to hide booze. You’re welcome).
Madam Dara from ‘Rumah Dara’ (international title: ‘Macabre’)
If you’re not into over-the-top sexy Halloween costumes, then the relatively prudish outfit worn by Madam Dara might be perfect for you.
You can probably rummage through your mother or grandmother’s clothes and find something in the style of the terrifying film’s psychopathic protagonist, Madam Dara. However, to achieve her intensely frightening look, you should wear a blood-red cardigan and cake your face with powder until you’re really pale. Don’t forget her cold stare.
‘Hantu Budeg’ (deaf ghost)
This requires little to no preparation at all.
‘Hantu Budeg’ tells the story of a woman who committed suicide in a hotel room after her fiancée left her for another woman. As she neared death, the woman’s grandfather stabbed a hairpin in her ear so that her spirit would rise to take revenge.
Pretty brutal stuff, but this tale makes for an easy costume. All you need is a hairpin like the ones above. When people at the Halloween party call you a spoilsport for not being in costume, slowly take out your hairpin while telling the story about how you killed yourself after your fiancée left you. That’ll show them.
‘Hantu Juga Selfie’ (ghosts take selfies too)
The only thing you have to know about this ridiculous movie is that it’s about a ghost that likes to photobomb selfies. That’s it. You don’t have to watch the movie now (you’re welcome).
This is the ultimate half-assed Halloween costume. You can even show up at a party wearing normal clothes. Just have your smartphone ready to take selfies with a bunch of people. For maximum spooky effect, make sure only parts of your limbs show up in the selfies, like so:
Use a photo editing app to draw a red circle around your ‘apparition’ afterwards. And then you can argue that that photo is your costume.
