If you were thinking of taking the stairs more often for exercise, this story will scare you off of using elevators for a while.

One elevator in the Taman Kemayoran Apartment in Central Jakarta fell down its shaft yesterday afternoon at around 1pm. Ten people were in the elevator at the time and nine were injured in the accident.

The other person in the elevator was dead, but they had already been dead before entering the lift.

A driver for one of victim’s told Vivanews that the elevator had dropped while the group had been transporting a body from the 8th floor of the apartment to a Hindu cremation ceremony in Cilincing.

The victims received injuries to their arms and legs and were taken to Mitra Kemayoran Hospital for treatment.

Kemayoran Police Inspector Harry said that no alarms went off inside the elevator before it fell to indicate the lift was overloaded. Police believe the accident was caused by the condition of the elevator’s cable.

“The age of the cable is the suspected cause of the elevator’s fall. See the condition of the cable, actually it is already old, and then suddenly it dropped from the 8th floor while going down to the first floor. If the lift was going up, it could have been worse,” Harry said as quoted by Tribunnews.

Harry estimated that the lift could have dropped from the 6th floor, though other accounts say the lift only dropped from the second floor.
