12 injured after Kampung Pulo riots, calm restored for now

The police have released a preliminary casualty count from the Kampung Pulo riot this morning, with both members of the police and citizens sustaining injuries.

“Until now, there are 12 injured victims. All of them got hit by rocks,” said Jakarta Police Deputy Chief Nandang Jumarna on location, as quoted by Metro TV this afternoon. 

Nandang added that 8 of the victims were citizens of Kampung Pulo, while the other 4 were police officers.

According to Metro TV, the police have arrested 22 teenagers who were heavily involved in this morning’s violent riot.

The riot broke out this morning when residents refused to be evicted from their illegally built settlements in Kampung Pulo, Jatinegara, The scene turned violent when hundreds of rioters threw rocks and firecrackers at authorities, as well as burning heavy equipment which was to be used to level the illegally built houses. 

The riots subsided in the afternoon when the police and the army managed to push the rioters back. Authorities are now reportedly ready to carry out the evictions in Kampung Pulo.
