The Indonesian government has taken a seemingly hardline approach against the threat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), officially banning any support or endorsement of the terrorist group and actively arresting suspected recruiters.
But it looks like the government is still not doing enough to stop the spread of ISIS ideology in Indonesia, as evidenced by the horrifying photo above. It shows what appears to be a newborn baby, posed between an automatic rifle and a grenade, next to a note urging Indonesians to join ISIS.
The note reads: “Uncles and aunts come and fight in Syria for jihad wherever you are”.
The photo was posted on the Twitter feed of Indonesian ISIS follower Abu Karimah (whose Twitter feed is full of similarly shocking and disgusting statements):
The baby photo was just one of the pieces of evidence used to illustrate an alarming article appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald this weekend, titled “Islamic State contagion growing in Indonesia”.
Another shocking piece of evidence used in the article was this video showing that ISIS is actively recruiting new members through the al-Fataa Mosque right here in Menteng, Central Jakarta. The video shows a group of young men inside the mosque pledging allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Terrorism experts believe thousands of Indonesians have pledged loyalty to ISIS and at least 300, and possibly as many as 700, have travelled to the Middle East to join the terrorist group’s cause – including civil servants, police and military personnel.
The whole SMH article is worth a read, but the bottomline is that the Indonesian Government has to start doing a lot more right now if it’s going to stop the spread of ISIS ideology in Indonesia.
