Biggest drug bust in the last 5 years: Police seize shipment of 360 kg of methamphetamines from China

A massive narcotics shipment consisting of 360 kg of methamphetamines from China was seized by Jakarta Police officers last Friday.

Officers also arrested two perpetrators, one an Indonesian man from Kalideres, West Jakarta, and one a Hong Kong citizen who had been living in North Jakarta. Police said two other suspects in the drug smuggling ring are currently being pursued.

“If the [amount of methamphetamines seized] were converted into rupiah, assuming 1 gram of methamphetamines is valued at Rp 1.5 million, it’s estimated to be worth Rp 574.4 billion,” said National Police Chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti during a press briefing on the bust this morning, as quoted by BeritaSatu.

Badrodin said it was the largest drug seizure by the Jakarta Police in the last five years and was the result of a joint effort by the North Jakarta Police and National Police Headquarters.

The police chief said the hunt for the perpetrators has been carried out over three weeks, with officers staking out four locations in Jakarta until they finally succeeded in catching the suspects with the evidence.

He also said that the evidence leading to the stakeout had been the result of numerous drug busts throughout Jakarta and an investigation into the international drug syndicate behind the methamphetamine smuggling. Chinese Police assisted in that investigation.

As you probably already guessed, the suspects in this case will almost certainly face the death penalty for their crimes.
