A post featuring photos of an official vehicle being escorted by military police right through the middle of Jalan Sudirman on Car Free Day last Sunday has been shared thousands of times on Facebook, with ordinary citizens outraged by an official so blatantly abusing his authority to break the rules.
The post was shared on the Car Free Day Indonesia page and mentioned that the car was allowed through the CFD barriers that are set to keep vehicles out of the restricted area. The car had a one-star military license plates with the number 1011-00, indicating it was used by a general.
The police have not yet revealed the identity of the car’s occupant or why their car was allowed in the restricted area.
“The info of social media will be verified and coordinated with the relevant parties,” Commissioner M Iqbal, head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Police, said on Wednesday as quoted by Kompas.
Iqbal said there are certain circumstances under which cars are allowed to enter the CFD zone, such as in life or death situations. He said it was up to the discretion of the police.
Something makes us think this wasn’t a life or death situation. Most netizens seem to feel the same way, who have left hundreds of critical comments on the post.
One comment summarizes what the majority say: “Rules are only for the regular people. Officials who get their salaries from our tax money are never touched by the rules. That is Indonesia.”
