The Jakarta provincial government is hiring 18,000 new street cleaners in June. Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama is taking this drastic action so that our streets can finally be clean from litter once and for all.
“In terms of cleanliness, I will not tolerate [anything otherwise]. I don’t want even a single cigarette butt to be visible [as litter on the street],” Ahok said yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.
The provincial government will divide the cleaners up into groups of 40 to 70 and send them to all of the sub-districts in Jakarta.
Each cleaner will be paid the provincial minimum wage of Rp 2.7 million per month. This should hopefully be a good opportunity for some of the city’s poorest to get some proper employment and a decent source of income.
But then again, it might still pay more to beg in Jakarta, and they won’t even have to work hard for their money.
