It’s official: plastic rice is being sold in markets. Well, in Bekasi at least, where its existence was first reported.

Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi today announced the results of a lab test of suspected synthetic rice found in Bantargebang market in Bekasi.

“The rice found in Bantargebang was indicated to be rice mixed with a material similar to polyvinyl,” Rahmat said at a press conference today, as quoted by Detik

Rahmat added that the material used to make the synthetic rice is the same material used in making pipes and cables.

“We will conduct further tests on consumers who bought the product,” he said.

The somewhat good news is that Rahmat said authorities have only found the plastic rice in the Bantargebang market. So far. We won’t be surprised if the plastic rice has already made its way to several other markets around Jabodetabek or even the country for that matter.
