Jakarta Government is sending a pair of orangutans to Pyongyang

The Jakarta Government is planning to provide a pair of orangutans to Pyongyang, North Korea, as a gesture of goodwill between the two cities.

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said the Pyongyang government had asked for a pair of orangutans since the time of Governor Fauzi Bowo. However, it has taken a significant amount of time to make the preparation for the primates’ presentation to the North Korean capital.

“[We’re sending] a pair. So that they can have children. Later we’ll bring them back,” Ahok said yesterday, as quoted by Merdeka.

The governor explained that the goals was for the orangutans, which are currently living in Jakarta’s Ragunan Zoo, to have babies in North Korea. Then the Pyongyang could continue to breed the offspring.

We’re not sure why Pyongyang is so keen on breeding orangutans. Hopefully it’s not to be a new food source for the North Korean people…
