President Jokowi officially appoints Badrodin Haiti as National Police chief

It’s been three months since Indonesia had a National Police chief. After numerous controversies including corruption allegations involving a candidate, the National Police finally has a new top cop in Badrodin Haiti.

President Joko Widodo officially appointed Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as National Police chief this morning at the State Palace.

Badrodin Haiti succeeds General Sutarman, who was honorably discharged from the top police position on January 16. Badrodin Haiti previously held the deputy chief position, and has served as acting National Police chief since Sutarman left office.

Budi Gunawan, the man President Jokowi initially put forward to replace Sutarman but forced to stand back after some corruption allegations, did not attend the ceremony. There were rumors that Budi Gunawan would be appointed as deputy chief to Badrodin Haiti. The new police chief will have the right to appoint the deputy of his choosing.

Starting today, Badrodin Haiti is scheduled to lead the National Police for the next 15 months, until he retires in July 2016.
