The Jakarta Government has made over Rp 200 billion from beer sales over the last 5 years

Even as Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has been forced to defend the sale of beer in the capital from conservative quarters, the Jakarta government continues to enjoy the dividends of their stake in a local beer business.

Many people don’t realize that the Jakarta Provincial Government is actually a stakeholder in PT Delta Djakarta, a beverage company that produces beers such as San Miguel, Anker, Carlsberg and Kuda Putih.  

Delta Djakarta, which is listed on the Indonesia stock exchange, is majority owned by San Miguel Malaysia, which controls 58.33% of the company’s shares.  

But the Jakarta Provincial government controls about 3.7 million shares in Delta Djakarta as well, equal to about 23.34% of the company. 

Based on the value of the company over the last 5 years, Jakarta’s shares in Delta Djakarta has earned the capital Rp 203.54 billion (~$15,724,686), as reported by Tribunnews.

There has been a great deal of anti-alcohol sentiment in Indonesia recently, with a ban on beer being sold at convenience stores set to take full effect in the middle of April.
