#KembalikanMediaIslam: Netizens criticize government for blocking Islamic sites deemed “radical”

One of the #KembalikanMediaIslam memes floating around Twitter right now

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has been busy blocking more websites recently, causing another round of criticism from outraged netizens.

The difference this time is that those critics are not liberals angry about the loss of sites like Vimeo or Reddit (or, of course, porn).

Instead, the outrage is coming from the conservative end of the political spectrum. The reason is because the ministry announced yesterday that they had blocked 19 Islamic websites judged to be dangerous for their “radical” content

The list includes sites such as voa-islam.com, muslimdaily.net, salam-online.com and eramuslim.com.

Netizens angry about these sites being blocked have taken up the hashtag #KembalikanMediaIslam (#BringBackIslamicMedia), which is the top trending topic in Indonesia at the time of writing. And like any trending topic here, numerous memes have emerged to illustrate it.

In this one, current Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rudiantara is compared unfavourably to his predecessor, Tifatul Sembiring.
