Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has been under scrutiny lately for using foul language during a live televised interview last week. But Ahok is wondering why some Jakarta City Council (DPRD) politicians aren’t being punished for their racist comments against him.
“I only said toilet waste the other day on TV, they’re even worse by calling me ‘dog’ and ‘stupid Chinese’. Why isn’t the Ethics Board [of the DPRD] looking into that?” Ahok said at City Hall today, as quoted by Detik.
Ahok also criticized DPRD Chairman Prasetyo Edi Marsudi, who called him a “Glodok merchant” (Glodok here referring to an electronics shopping center where most of the merchants are Chinese).
“And then wasn’t Pras (Prasetyo) racist when he said I was a Glodok merchant? I’m not a Glodok merchant, boss! I’ve never been a businessman, I was a miner,” Ahok said.
“What does Glodok have to do with me? Racist. [They’re from] nationalist political parties but they’re racist. There are laws against that and they can be punished.”
