Puteri Indonesia 2015 Anindya Putri facing social media backlash over hammer and sickle t-shirt photo

Another year, another Puteri Indonesia embroiled in a photo scandal. Puteri Indonesia 2015 Anindya Kusuma Putri became the second Puteri in a row to have a controversial photo go viral on the internet – the first of course being Puteri Indonesia 2014 Elvira Devinamira’s infamous photo scandal with suspended KPK Chief Abraham Samad.

Anindya, who hails from Central Java allegedly uploaded a photo of herself wearing a hammer and sickle t-shirt on her Instagram account. In case anyone needs a reminder, the hammer and sickle is a symbol of communism that was also adopted by the controversial Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), which was abolished in 1965. Since then, communism and its “god-less” values have been prohibited in Indonesia.

In any case, netizens reacted negatively to Anindya’s photo. Many are questioning whether the 23-year-old is fit to be Puteri Indonesia and represent the country in the next edition of Miss Universe after showing such insensitivity or ignorance to Indonesia’s past.

We ask the government to take away the Puteri Indonesia title from Anindya Kusuma Putri who has spread COMMUNIST attributes

Is it appropriate for Puteri Indonesia 2015 Anindya Kusuma Putri to wear a t-shirt with a communist logo?

Puteri Indonesia can’t think for herself

The photo in question was taken down from Anindya’s Instagram account, but the screenshot of the photo is still being widely circulated online. The screenshot suggests that the photo was taken 37 weeks ago and has only been picked up and scrutinized by netizens for the past few days.

The photo’s caption, “I am so Vietnam today!” might suggest that the photo was taken when Anindya was in Vietnam, which would justify her wearing the t-shirt. But maybe it would’ve been wise for her not to upload the photo on Instagram since communism is still such a taboo topic in Indonesia.
