Badrodin Haiti, new top cop candidate
President Joko Widodo finally put an end to weeks of speculation and dirty politics by taking Budi Gunawan out of contention for the position of National Police Chief.
Jokowi reasoned that he came to the decision in order to maintain peace and order following public furor over Budi Gunawan’s nomination.
“As the conflict has sparked division in society, I feel the need to do something to calm the situation and unite the police corps,” he said in a televised press conference today, as quoted by the Jakarta Globe.
While most of the public would surely rejoice by the news, it seems we’re back to square one when Jokowi announced his next police chief candidate.
“The National Police needs a leader. I am now nominating a new candidate for the National Police Chief position: Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti,” Jokowi said.
Badrodin, who is the current acting National Police Chief after the resignation of Sutarman, said he is up for the task.
“I just heard that. I am ready for the responsibility,” Badrodin said.
Apart from their similar neatly-trimmed moustache, Badrodin, like Budi Gunawan, is also suspected by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of having a fat bank account.
Jokowi’s decision to nominate Badrodin Haiti is being criticized on social media.
Badrodin Haiti’s nomination is of course pending the approval of the House of Representatives. Hopefully we won’t have to go through another exhausting Budi Gunawan-esque saga as the National Police awaits its new chief.
