The government can solve Jakarta’s flooding – it just needs Rp 118 trillion ($9.2 billion) to do it

So, we can all agree that the flooding really, really sucks. So what would it take for the government to completely fix the flood problem, once and for all?

Apparently, what it would take is Rp 118 trillion (~$9.2 billion)

That’s the amount the Jakarta Provincial Government has said would be required to enact a comprehensive plan to solve the capital’s floodwater woes.

Head of Water Management for Jakarta Agus Priyono said those funds would be used to purchase six giant pumps, raise the dikes on Jakarta’s northern coast, normalize the flow of water through our rivers, as well as build a canal on the west side of Jakarta to channel overflow water from our rivers directly into the Java Sea.

“After we calculated, the budget required would be Rp118 trillion,” Agus said yesterday, as quoted by Vivanews

According to Agus, the vast majority of that money would actually go towards purchasing the land needed to properly implement all of those projects, especially normalizing the rivers and building new reservoirs.
