Pro Budi Gunawan “supporters” paid Rp 50k plus lunch to demonstrate for the corruption suspect at his pretrial hearing

Pretrial proceedings in the Corruption Eradication Committee’s (KPK’s) case against National Police Chief candidate Budi Gunawan continued today, with supporters of both the KPK and Budi braving the heavy rain to show their support at the South Jakarta District Courthouse.

Well, the KPK supporters did at least. According to one of Budi “supporters,” he and his fellow pro-polisi protesters actually braved the rain for Rp. 50k, plus transport costs and a nasi bungkus.

“Why would anyone want to join this if they were not being paid?” said Asril, one of the pro Budi protesters, as quoted by Tempo

Seems like a lot of people were ready to professionally protest even on this rainy day as Tempo pegged the number of demonstrators outside the courthouse at about 1,000.

Asril told Tempo he felt lucky to be able to go to take part in the paid protesting since the heavy rains meant he wouldn’t have been able to open his food stall and work as usual today.

Earlier in the day, one of the demo participants supporting the police  had shouted that he had not been paid and that his support was a matter of conscience. Uh-huh.
