Three more bodies found from Air Asia QZ8501, bringing total to six, not 40

Indonesian National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) found three more bodies thought to be passengers and crew of the Air Aslia flight QZ8501 that went missing on Sunday. One of the recovered bodies was wearing a flight attendant’s uniform.

“Today, this morning, we found and evacuated three bodies: two men and one woman. The woman was wearing a flight attendant’s uniform,” said Henry Bambang Sulistyo, head of Basarnas, at a press conference in Basarnas Headquarters in Jakarta this morning, as quoted by Kompas

Sulistyo said the bodies were recovered at 06:06 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), 06:45 WIB, and 06:56 WIB respectively.

“The condition [of the bodies] are swollen but are recognizable,” Sulistyo said.

Contrary to previous reports on news outlets that 40 bodies had been recovered, Basarnas clarified that they have recovered six bodies from the Air Asia QZ8501 search area, which is around 100 nautical miles southwest off the coast of Pangkalan Bun, Central Borneo.

All evacuated bodies were taken on board Indonesian naval ship the KRI Bung Tomo. Weather permitting, the bodies will be flown to a base in Pangkalan Bun today.
