Ahok’s mother says she’s not proud of her son becoming governor

Our newly official governor, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama might have just become the first Christian and first person of Chinese descent to become the leader of Indonesia’s capital city. He’s made a lot of us proud, not just for his take-no-prisoners governing style but also as a sign of how Jakarta is progressing.

One person who surprisingly said she was not proud of Ahok becoming governor today was his own mother, Buniarti Ning. How could she say such a thing?

“I’m not proud because there are still poor people, still so many flood and still so many other problems. If all of that is finished, then I’ll be proud,” Ahok’s mom told reporters at the State Palace today, as quoted by Detik. We’re not sure if she was joking.

Either way, those are some pretty tough requirements. But then, we had to expect that it would take a tough mom to produce a tough politician like Ahok, right?

Buniarti advised her son that he should always maintain trust in his duties. She also said that she always prayed that her son would always be safe, wherever he was.

“If he is honest and love his country, God will watch over him,” she said.
