Jokowi still signed in as Jakarta governor until SBY signs him out

“Ehh, Pak, could you sign this please?” “Mmmmmm, nah. Maybe later.”

Despite having already given his resignation speech and ending his work as the governor of Jakarta, as of this morning President-elect Joko Widodo is still serving as the governor of Jakarta from 2012 to 2017 because his letter of resignation has not yet been signed by outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

Minister of the Interior Gamawan Fauzi said Jokowi’s resignation letter was submitted to SBY on Saturday (11/10). However, as confirmed by Detik.com on Monday night, Jokowi letter has still not been signed by SBY.

“It was sent to the President two days ago through the State Secretariat. Perhaps it is still in process,” Gamawan said in a text message to Detik.com on Monday.

Gawaman said he was sure, the letter would be signed by Yudhoyono before Jokowi’s inauguration as President on October 20. But, while waiting for SBY to sign on the dotted line, Jokowi is still technically the Governor of Jakarta.

Jokowi read his resignation speech as governor of Jakarta during a Parliamentary plenary session on Oct. 2. On Oct. 6, Jokowi listened to the opinions of the City Council regarding his resignation. After that, Jokowi said he sent his letter of resignation to the Minister of Home Affairs to be passed along to SBY.
