Mark Zuckerberg checks in at Borobudur, visits Kampung Cyber in Yogjakarta before meeting with Jokowi in Jakarta today

The rumors we mentioned on Friday turned out to be true – Mark Zuckerberg, boy billionaire founder of Facebook, came to Indonesia this weekend and just arrived in Jakarta this morning to meet with President-elect Joko Widodo and other officials to talk about his online  Internet.org.

Zuckerberg started off his Indonesia visit with a sunrise visit to Borobudur temple on Sunday where he took this widely shared and liked photo:

On Sunday afternoon, Zuckerberg headed to nearby Yogjakarta to make a surprise visit to Kampung Cyber (Cyber Village), a wired neighborhood in which all of the residents, from children to the elderly, are given computer training so that they can use the internet and communicate about the community online. Zuckerberg seemed particularly impressed that the project was done privately, without governmental help.

But Mr. Facebook intends on getting the Indonesian government to help support Internet.org the Facebook-initiated project with the goal of connecting everyone on Earth to the Internet. The project’s aim is to make the Internet available to the two-thirds of the world’s population that still do not have Internet access.

The first stop on Zuckerberg’s itinerary today was a meeting with Jokowi at City Hall. He arrived there, dressed in a suit (much more formal than his usual t-shirt, shorts and sandals) and surrounded by bodyguards before being whisked away to his meeting with our soon-to-be President. Stay tuned to Coconuts Jakarta as we’ll be on Zuckerberg watch all day today.
